Most girls and young women are fearful and unprepared when they start having their menstrual cycle. These girls often miss school, fall behind in their education, and end up terminating their education early.

Empowering Girls through the Suraksha Project: Breaking Barriers, Fostering Dignity

The subject of menstrual hygiene has long been shrouded in awkward silence, entrenched taboos, and societal discomfort. This silence, however, comes at a grave cost, particularly for adolescent girls and young women in rural areas and slums who often find themselves without access to essential menstrual hygiene supplies.

The consequences are far-reaching, as these young individuals grapple with fear and unpreparedness when they embark on their menstrual journey. Many are forced to miss school, leading to educational setbacks, and sadly, too many are compelled to prematurely terminate their education, inflicting dire consequences on their families, communities, and the nation at large.

The Problem Unveiled

Recent research paints a stark picture: approximately 74% of menstruating women in India lack access to sanitary products during their periods, resorting to makeshift alternatives such as pieces of cloth, rags, ash, or husk. Shockingly, this dire situation results in nearly one in four adolescent girls quitting school upon reaching puberty.

Furthermore, poor menstrual hygiene contributes to nearly 70% of reproductive diseases in India. A 2016 report on sanitation facilities for women reveals that approximately 63 million adolescent girls reside in homes devoid of toilet facilities, with 23% of girls discontinuing their education upon menstruation onset. A primary factor driving this dropout rate is the absence of adequate toilets in schools. Such is the magnitude of stigma surrounding this natural biological process that it is seldom openly discussed or addressed.

Dispelling Myths: Shaping a Healthier Future

Challenging myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation is imperative. Myths that label menstruating women as impure, prohibit their entry into kitchens or participation in religious activities, or even discourage essential hygiene practices must be dismantled with accurate information and open dialogue. It is crucial to foster a culture where education, awareness, and discussions serve as vehicles for eradicating stigma and elevating menstrual health practices among women.

Our Action Plan - A Catalyst for Change

The HealingTrain Foundation is steadfast in its commitment to confronting these challenges head-on. Our comprehensive approach includes:

Education and Empowerment: Educating girls about menstrual hygiene and their own bodies, empowering them with knowledge and confidence.

Cultivating a Supportive Environment: Creating an atmosphere that not only reduces stigma but also fosters open discussions and support for girls during menstruation.

Teacher Sensitization: Training teachers and school staff to be sensitive to the unique needs and concerns of menstruating girls.
